FAYE SHU

Faye Shu is a non-formally trained filmmaker and video artist. She has made films about solitary beings that do not fit in. She’s interested in representing everyday objects and encounters in odd or less realistic forms to suggest how identity is porous and can be (re)invented, and for a person, it can extend beyond origin, ethnicity, or sexuality. Along that vein, she’s interested in communities that are not defined by shared origin, ethnicity, or sexuality, instead by common traits that are not obvious or easily capitalizable. She experiments with this idea in her short films “Foliage” and “A Traveller’s Lament.” In the latter, she anthropomorphises seagulls, a species that could be said to develop human-like traits. Her films have been showcased in film festivals and exhibitions in many parts of the world. With a degree in Economics, she found her entrance into independent filmmaking through translating film scripts for feature film directors: Lucky Lu (2025), Blue Sun Palace (2024), and The Vagrant Master (2023).
